Gender Creative Kids Canada, in collaboration with the Montréal creative agency lg2, decided to create a tool to help trans children and youth and their families by making our society a safer and more inclusive place. Based on the premise that nobody is born transphobic, the “You Inside Project” came to life in order to stop transphobia before it starts.
The first phase of the pilot project allowed for the distribution of 250 of the Sam educational tools in Canadian schools, allowing teachers and professionals to discuss children’s gender and identity exploration. In addition to being remarkably received in London, New York, Toronto and Cannes, this project was a finalist for the Droits et libertés award by Quebec’s Commission des droits de la personne et des droits de la jeunesse.
Not only is Sam an educational tool, it is also a symbol of pride, acceptance and understanding. Sam gives every adult the opportunity to contribute in the fight against transphobia by educating children and youth on questions around identity, gender expression and how important it is to be compassionate and to respect trans, non-binary and gender creative people.
Transphobia is an international issue in the realm of human rights. Our mission is to educate society on questions around gender diversity because education leads to understanding, compassion and, finally, acceptance.
The second phase of this project consisted in creating a pedagogical guide for elementary schools in order to offer them playful sensitization activities that can be facilitated in class. To learn more about our guide entitled Hi Sam: Sensitizing Youth Through Play, click here!
